O High-End Show é um festival pagão celebrado na Baviera no Dia da Ascensão para honrar os deuses do som, com muita cerveja para lavar os pecados da luxúria do áudio topo de gama. A equipa do Hificlube, constituída por Pedro Henriques e JVH, volta a juntar-se para fazer a melhor cobertura do certame, de 9 a 12 de maio.
The High-End Show is a pagan festival celebrated in Bavaria on Ascension Day to honour the gods of sound, with lots of beer to wash away the sins of high-end audio lust. The Hificlube team, consisting of Pedro Henriques and JVH, will join again to provide the best show coverage, from 9th to 12th of May.
O Hificlube faz a cobertura do High End Show há anos. Desde Frankfurt até Munique. Este é o maior salão de alta-fidelidade do mundo, tanto para profissionais como para o público em geral. Em 2023, um total de 22.137 visitantes de cerca de 100 países diferentes estiveram presentes para descobrir os novos produtos e novidades dos 550 expositores de 54 nações.
Hificlube has been covering the High-End Show since ever. From Frankfurt to Munich. This is the largest hifi show on earth both for professionals and the general public. In 2023, a total of 22,137 visitors from around 100 different countries attended to find out about the new products and innovations of its 550 exhibitors from 54 nations.

Professionals will find here the largest assortment of high-end goodies and product premieres in the world. No company or manufacturer can afford not to showcase its products here, lest they have decided to go out of business already.

Plus, there’s lots of fun, entertainment, live and canned music, fresh and canned food, and lots of beer, enough to satisfy the rushing crowds of visitors and cult followers. Smokers cannot enter, but dogs are welcome. And who cares if noise from the next room creeps in through the glass walls, and if in the open spaces downstairs it is impossible to demo open-backed headphones because of the ambient noise?

A 10 de maio de 2024, mesmo a tempo da abertura do High End, será lançado o novo álbum de estúdio “A Memory Of Our Future” dos Mandoki Soulmates.
Vistors can also look forward to Leslie Mandoki's presence during the trade show. The Mandoki Soulmates are a unique band, who have won 35 Grammys and sold over 350 million records. On May 10, 2024, and thus nearly in time for the opening of the audio show, the new studio album "A Memory Of Our Future" of the Mandoki Soulmates is being released.

We have watched the High-End Show grow to such proportions it is no longer ‘coverable’. One has to make choices, and inevitably, some of the hundreds of companies, thousands of different brands and many other products will never be caught by our camera, nor the sound they make be digitally recorded live for you to enjoy. Sometimes, it’s not really music, just noise, depending a lot on the mood of whoever is flipping discs. And, boy! Do they talk a lot before they play some music…

Mesmo nos dias dedicados à imprensa e à indústria, o Show está em constante bulício. Não se pode simplesmente “andar por ali”, pois é preciso entrar numa centena de salas para fazer o nosso trabalho. Conversar com um amigo distribuidor durante mais de 5 minutos é um luxo, quanto mais ficar sentado durante longas demonstrações e apresentações à porta fechada. Lá fora, a feira é um rio sem fim, e é preciso continuar a remar para lhe sobreviver.
Even on press and industry-only days, the show is bustling. One cannot simply ‘loiter with intent’ in the large halls, you have a hundred rooms to enter and be amazed. Chatting with a distributor friend for more than 5 minutes is a luxury, let alone staying for long closed-door demos and presentations. The show is an endless winding river, and you have to keep paddling to survive it.

É claro que a nossa reportagem vai apresentar sobretudo áudio high end. Deixo os produtos mais mundanos para os delegados dos meios de comunicação não especializados que passam o tempo à volta dos carros e das miúdas em exposição, ou sentados nos bares no exterior, quando o sol brilha, a fazer copy-paste comunicados de imprensa para poupar tempo.
Of course, our report will feature mostly high-end audio. I leave the more mundane products to the non-specialised media delegates who spend their time around cars and girls, or sitting at the bars outside, when the sun is shining, copy-pasting press releases to save time.

Normalmente, limitamo-nos a espreitar para uma sala, tirar algumas fotografias, ouvir brevemente, rabiscar algumas notas e catalogar provisoriamente os sistemas como “esquecíveis”, “escutáveis”, “altamente escutáveis” ou "som high end” para nos lembrarmos mais tarde, quando tentamos dar algum sentido a toda esta informação antes de a publicar.
Normally, we just peek into a room, take a few photos, listen briefly, scribble a few notes, and tentatively tag the systems as ‘forgettable’, ‘listenable’, ‘highly listenable’ or ‘high-end stuff’ to keep track later when we try to make some sense out of all that information before publishing.

On the following day, we return to the best performers that have been identified as 'highly listenable' to capture live recordings, and videos, and take more photos. These materials will assist us in making the final decision for the 'Best of the Show' award. However, please note that this decision is not entirely technical, but also a personal and editorial one. By 'political', we mean that it is a game of opinions that we all participate in to attract more readers who enjoy conflicting perspectives and polemical views.
Será que “melhor” implica que comparámos todas as opções? Infelizmente, isso não é possível. Por outro lado, “O Melhor” sugere que, não só avaliámos todos, como escolhemos um de entre eles. Outra tarefa impossível.
Does 'better' imply that we have compared all options? Unfortunately, that's not possible. On the other hand, 'best' suggests that we have evaluated them all and picked one from the pack. Another impossible task.
