O ponto alto das Ultimate Sessions foi o sistema Avantgarde, que tocava todos os géneros de música de forma enérgica.

The highlight of the show was the Avantgarde system, which played all genres of music with aplomb.

O som era claro, detalhado e matizado, fazendo sobressair o melhor em cada faixa, quer se tratasse de uma peça clássica com grande massa orquestral, quer de uma batida ofegante de hip-hop .

The sound was clear, detailed, and nuanced, and the system managed to bring out the best in each track, whether it was a soaring classical piece or a thumping hip-hop beat.

O sistema foi instalado numa enorme sala de conferências no Sheraton, e embora a acústica da sala pudesse ter sido melhor, o som conseguiu ainda assim encher o enorme espaço com o brilho quente e convidativo das válvulas de baixa potência do Kondo Ongaku ‘amplificado’ pelas cornetas.

The system was set up in a huge conference room at the Sheraton, and while the room acoustics could have been better, the sound still managed to fill the room with the warm, inviting glow of the Kondo Ongaku low-power tubes ‘amplified’ by the horns.

As cornetas são direcionais por natureza. Se se sentar diretamente em frente de uma das colunas, só vai ouvir o som que sai dela. Talvez por isso, as pessoas corriam para a 'sweet spot', possivelmente para experimentarem aquela sensação inquietante de que o cantor podia sair a qualquer momento de dentro da boca dos Spacehorns colocados entre os dois altifalantes.

Horns are directional by nature. If you sit directly in front of one of the speakers, you will only hear the sound coming out of it. People fought for the sweet spot, possibly to experience the unsettling sensation of the singer suddenly emerging from the Spacehorns mouth placed between both speakers.

Para alargar a imagem estéreo, Miguel Carvalho colocou os visitantes a quatro, talvez mesmo cinco, metros de distância no sábado. Assim, o sistema produziu um palco sonoro amplo e sólido, cheio de brilho e luz com imagens sonoras claras de todos os músicos e instrumentos em presença.

To widen the stereo image, Miguel Carvalho placed the audience four, maybe even five, meters apart from the speakers on Saturday. That way, the system produced a soundstage that was wide and solid, filled with bright lighting and very clear sound images from all the musicians and instruments.

Já o escrevi uma vez: as Avantgarde projetam o som como uma enorme bola de sabão transparente, que nos permite ‘ver’ o seu interior e detetar lá dentro todos os pequenos pormenores na mistura.

I have written it before: The Avantgarde System seems to project the sound into the room as a huge, transparent soap ball that we can see through to find all the little details in the mix.

Wadax Reference Server

Nada é deixado à nossa imaginação. No escuro do palco, ou perdido na mistura, tudo nos é dado a ver à luz do dia com excecional detalhe e recorte fino, o que torna a audição numa experiência excitante e recompensadora.

Nothing is left to our imagination, either in the darkness of the soundstage or lost in the mix; everything is brought to light with extraordinary detail and fine editing, which makes the act of listening to the music itself an exciting and rewarding experience.

Há quem goste e quem deteste as colorações características das cornetas. Mas não é possível ficar indiferente a esta sensação de presença física, que uns sentem que os oprime, outros que os redime.

There are those who love and those who hate horn colourations. However, it is impossible to remain indifferent to this sense of physical presence, which some find oppressive while others find it redeeming.

Sobre as Avantgarde, escrevi também: ‘Nada como uma corneta para reproduzir...eh... trombetas; nada como um Basshorn para pegar uma bateria pelos... cornos. E se aquilo toca, caramba!... O ataque, a dinâmica e a reprodução da crista dos transitórios dos sons de percussão é algo de indefinível e inexplicável. O ataque, a dinâmica e a reprodução de transientes de percuso algo indefinível e inexplicável que se tem de viver pessoalmente. Então, e só então, é que se pode julgar.

About the Avantgarde I also wrote once that 'Nothing beats a horn at reproducing brass; nothing beats a Basshorn to grab the percussion by the... horns. And it plays damn loud too!   The attack, the dynamics and the reproduction of percussion transient crests are something indefinable and inexplicable that you have to experience for yourself. Then, and only then, can you judge.

E fiquei para ali de boca aberta a ouvir aquele tsunami de som, como se estivéssemos a ver um filme em IMAX. E a pensar como é possível que todo aquele som venha de um amplificador a tríodos de 20 watts com apenas 10 watts de potência utilizável (os Spacehorns são ativos, atenção).

I just sat there spellbound, listening to a tsunami of sound as if watching a movie in IMAX. And wondering how it is possible that all that sound is coming from a 20-watt triode amplifier with only 10 watts of usable power (Spacehorns are active, though).

Ao ouvir faixa após faixa, dei por mim a sentir-me invadido pelo som. Como se tivesse recebido uma dose de adrenalina pura. Toda a experiência de ouvir música no sistema Kondo/Ongaku Avantgarde é um choque físico e emocional.

As I listened to track after track, I found myself feeling overwhelmed by the sound. It felt like a shot of pure adrenaline. The whole experience of listening to music on the Kondo/Ongaku Avantgarde system comes as a physical and emotional shock.

Também apreciei a versatilidade do sistema de Avantgarde. Lidou com todos os tipos de música com facilidade, desde baladas delicadas a hinos rockeiros de grande impacto sonoro. O som era limpo e brilhante mas nunca duro ou ríspido. Nem mesmo quando Miguel Carvalho aceitou um pedido para tocar Jeff Beck ao vivo, ao nível de concerto ao vivo...!

I also appreciated how versatile the Avantgarde system was. It handled all types of music with ease, from delicate ballads to hard-hitting rock anthems. The sound was clean and bright but never harsh or grating. Not even when Miguel Carvalho accepted a request to play Jeff Beck live, at, er, live concert level...!

Num teste SINAD, o Ongaku, que custa dezenas de milhares de euros, falharia com 80 pontos, longe dos 140 pontos de um qualquer amplificador chinês de estado sólido de menos de mil euros! E, no entanto, não se ouve distorção alguma. Só música. Com cornetas, a potência produzida por 10 W é superior à de um amplificador de estado-sólido de 500 W, ou mais, com altifalantes dinâmicos convencionais.

In a SINAD test, the Ongaku, which costs tens of thousands of euros, would fail with 80 points, far from the 140 points of any Chinese solid-state amplifier costing less than a thousand euros! And yet there is no distortion to be heard. Only music. With horns, the perceived power of 10 W is higher than that of a 500 W transistor amplifier or more with conventional dynamic speakers.
