Se ainda restavam dúvidas que, depois dos sucessivos desaires do MiniDisc e do SACD, a Sony desta vez ia ganhar a guerra da alta definição Blu-Ray vs. HD-DVD, eis que o gigante Warner, que tem um dos mais vastos catálogos de êxitos de bilheteira, anunciou hoje oficialmente, através de um comunicado conjunto de Barry Meyer e Kevin Tsujihara, que “a pedido do público”, a Warner vai passar a editar o seu catálogo de vídeo de alta definição exclusivamente em Blu-Ray, abandonando a política seguida até agora de apoiar ambos os formatos, isto numa aparente resposta à Paramount que, no ano passado, optou pelo HD-DVD. E transcrevo no original os motivos apontados, segundo a Twice, a revista oficial da CES:
“The window of opportunity for high-definition DVD could be missed if format confusion continues to linger. We believe that exclusively distributing in Blu-ray will further the potential for mass market success and ultimately benefit retailers, producers, and most importantly, consumers.”
Para Jeff Bewkes, President da Time Warner: “Today's decision by Warner Bros. to distribute in a single format comes at the right time and is the best decision both for consumers and Time Warner.”
Segundo a Warner, manter vivos os dois formatos só iria contribuir para aumentar mais a confusão do consumidor.
Mais vale tarde do que nunca, diz o povo. É que esta luta de guerrilha podia matar a nova galinha dos ovos de ouro, que consiste em reeditar todo o catálogo antigo em alta definição..., digo eu.
Tsujihara teve ainda palavras simpáticas para com a Toshiba, que, depois deste anúncio, vai aparecer muito desmoralizada na CES:
“Consumers have clearly chosen Blu-ray, and we believe that recognizing this preference is the right step in making this great home entertainment experience accessible to the widest possible audience. Warner Bros. has worked very closely with the Toshiba Corporation in promoting high definition media and we have enormous respect for their efforts. We look forward to working with them on other projects in the future.”
Pois, sim, não há nada como um bom diplomata.
