Wharfedale EVO 5.2 — A Bookshelf Speaker with Its Feet on the Floor

Beautiful, decorative, and lifestyle, yes. But this bookshelf speaker is more than a bibelot—it delivers ‘floorstanding’ sound at a price that seems almost too good to be true: 999 euros.

Wharfedale unveiled the new EVO 5 series at High End Munich 2025. Hificlube was present and reported on the event. The EVO 5.2s weren’t playing in Munich but were on static display alongside their range’s siblings: EVO 5.1, 5.3, and 5.4. The latter was the only one actually playing.

The EVO 5.2 is the series’ standout. Often called a compact bookshelf or stand-mounted monitor, it’s distinctive for its genuine 3-way design—a rarity at this price.

More than just lifestyle

There are listeners who accept the limitations of bookshelf speakers. I know I do. They sound good and look compact, refined, and also decorative, but somehow keep reminding us that we’d prefer the greater presence and range of a floorstander.

Then there are products like the Wharfedale EVO 5.2. These monitors are designed to break that barrier. Wharfedale pitches the EVO 5 series as a step up from the EVO 4. The design keeps the Elysian project's philosophy: deliver high-end technology at affordable prices. Still, nearly everything is revised—drivers, crossovers, enclosure, damping, and even how the reflex system’s air flows into the room.

Full-size cabinet

The EVO 5 Series is larger than the EVO 4. This results in greater internal volume and deeper bass across all models. Additionally, the hybrid plinth, or base, combines wood and metal elements. These reinforce structural integrity and reduce unwanted vibrations. This shows the EVO 5.2 focuses on more than just visual design.

The cabinet is built with layered wood of varying densities in a sandwich structure to minimise panel resonance. Rounded front edges reduce diffraction for better room integration.

A true 3-way system

The EVO 5.2 is a true 3-way design. It features a 165 mm Kevlar woofer, a 50 mm soft-dome midrange, and a 35 x 70 mm AMT tweeter.

Wharfedale says the new AMT moves four times more air than an equal-area dome tweeter, with less distortion, faster response, better dispersion, and greater extension.

The AMT (Air Motion Transformer) is a type of tweeter that uses an ultra-light, pleated diaphragm placed between magnets. As the diaphragm moves, it rapidly squeezes air out, rather than pushing it like a standard dome tweeter, enabling high-frequency reproduction with low distortion.

More importantly, the AMT has grown from 30 x 60 mm to 35 x 70 mm. This aims to improve efficiency and dispersion. It sends a clear message: more air = more freedom = less harshness.

Sensitivity is 88 dB. Nominal impedance is 4 ohms (minimum 3.2 ohms). Bass extension is 38 Hz (-6 dB). With a 27.2-litre volume and a weight of 15 kg, this model is closer to a small floorstander than a bookshelf. Recommended power: 25–120 watts. Max SPL: 105 dB.

Less colouration, more music

  • The new series uses SilentWeave, a cotton-felt blend filter behind the diaphragm, to reduce reflections and colour.
  • All speakers feature the elastomer ResoFrame, seen as a serration on the front, and for the AMT, an added gasket to reduce resonance and smooth mid-highs.
  • The woofer uses ResoSeal, a light-damping ring near the suspension, to achieve more natural vocals.

Wharfedale did not pursue greater detail; instead, it opted for reduced colouration and improved integration.

A midrange with a voice

The midrange sets this speaker apart. The EVO 5.2 uses a 50 mm dome midrange with a soft, damped, vented diaphragm. It also features a rear chamber for energy absorption.

The brand specifies a linear response from 800 Hz to 5 kHz. This is impressive for a midrange. SilentWeave and ResoFrame technologies help the crossover blend AMT speed with fabric-dome detail. This avoids the “collage” effect.

First impressions

When I took them out of the box, my first impression was that I was looking at a carefully crafted object—not just another box with speakers attached. There is a constructional logic to the EVO 5.2. It bears the mark of a master: Peter Comeau.

My sample arrived in white. Other available colours include black, grey, and walnut. If white matches your décor, consider choosing it for its sense of lightness and visual subtlety.

I usually connect the speakers to a Class D amplifier—energy-efficient and reasonably powerful, like the Eversolo Play. It also serves as a streamer. I let them play softly, day and night. Whenever I entered the room, I noticed the bass was audible without having to turn up the volume.

Swinging bass

The bass has a swinging character: articulate and well-balanced, provided they are not placed too close to corners. Give them space to breathe and avoid placing them on a shelf. Treat the EVO 5.2s as floorstanding speakers, even though they are not, as they require stands.

Power is needed

It was time to give them the luxury treatment. I used tubes in triode mode from a low-power (10 W) LAB12 Mighty amplifier with a Bluesound Node Icon as the source. Even at low volume, the sound was delightful. However, it hardened slightly at higher volumes.

When everything clicks

All it took was connecting them to an Advance Paris A8 Apex hybrid amplifier to listen with a big smile. You can also achieve excellent results with electronics from Audiolab or Quad. Both are brands from the same IAG group and distributed by Sarte Audio.

Soundstage magic

Treble is typical of the AMT tweeter: airy and detailed, but smoother than usual—perhaps due to SilentWeave. The midrange adds natural body and warmth. The bass is impressive for a monitor this size: quick, articulate, and authoritative, as long as it is not placed too close to the wall.

There is a sense of scale foreign to “bookshelf” monitors that adds drama and theatricality to the soundstage.

Wharfedale has never been a maker of very bright, analytical speakers. The brand prefers musicality, tonal body, and extended listening.

The EVO 5.2 honours that lineage while bringing greater dynamic ambition and technical refinement.

The Wharfedale EVO 5.2 targets listeners who want the bass, body, and comfort of a large speaker. These are traits often associated with floorstanders. It maintains the space-saving form of a monitor and aims to satisfy those who do not want or cannot accommodate an actual floor-standing speaker.

Perhaps its greatest strength is its ability to blend decorative aesthetics with functionality in a compact design that doesn't sound ‘compact’ and delivers a full-range audio experience at an affordable price.
